2010 . Reinventing everything
SATURDAY 10th AND SUNDAY 11th APRIL 2010
The Cité de la Réussite is 20 years old. Since 1989, hundreds of key players in the public debate have come to discuss and exchange views with students and a constantly growing public. Year after year, all the people taking part in the Cité de la Réussite have tried to make their own modest contribution to civic debate. Sharing knowledge, taking an interest, being astonished, asking questions, learning and understanding others: these are the simple values we have attempted to promote over the last two decades. And so, in this anniversary year, the Cité de la Réussite has decided to ask its participants to "reinvent everything."
As we prepare to embark on a new decade, we increasingly perceive the emergence of a new society in a new world. International upheavals, be they economic, political or social, are radically transforming our frames of reference. What we have learned is no longer entirely true.
Each generation must model the world in its own fashion. In 1945, we rebuilt it. In 1968, we revolutionised it. In 2010, the new generation wants to reinvent it!
Environmental awareness, financial crisis, heritage preservation, man's place in society, the huge increase in sharing of information, the search for identity: today's citizens are closely in touch with the changes taking place in an increasingly globalised world. Taking responsibility for their own fate and that of the planet, human beings want to have greater influence over the events that govern their daily lives. Rather than passively submitting, citizens want to act. Rather than watching the world change, they want to reinvent it.
For several years now, observers have discerned a shift in young peoples' ideas and values. Solidarity, pragmatism, responsibility to future generations: many of them believe that we can build a better world. Might we – at last – hope for a more humanistic era?
On every continent, ordinary citizens and key players in the public debate are exploring every avenue in the attempt to imagine a different reality. The codes and rules of the economy, health, ecology, governance and science are being contested and challenged so as better to invent the world of tomorrow. And what if we dreamed, first and foremost, of giving man his rightful place at the heart of this transformation of the system? After all, does not reinventing everything mean dreaming, first of all, of a better world?
